Community Use
A brief that seeks to enhance the community use of college facilities is to be encouraged.
Public accessibility, however, needs to be considered alongside issues of security and health and safety. The location, therefore, of college facilities within the masterplan that can be publicly accessed without breaching security out of normal hours or at weekends is preferable.
Community access to facilities should be considered in the wider context of developing opportunities for commercial activity to sit within the college domain, especially if it has a business link to a curriculum activity. Such activities could include a doctor’s surgery, a dentist’s surgery, local health centre, local library, nursery through to a retail franchise for a coffee shop or a travel agency to name but a few.
Community use and access should be considered for the following possible college facilities:
Sports fields
Sports Halls and changing facilities
Gym
Dance Studio
Music Studio
Drama Studio
Multi Purpose Hall
Art Studio/Gallery
Hair Salon/Beauty Salon
Florist
Travel Agency
FoodShop/Books/Stationary/Materials Shop
Café
Refectory/restaurant
LRC/IT access
Reception/Advice and Guidance/Business Services.
