Environment

Minimising the impact of the college's Transport strategy on the environment

Choice of Transport

Pedestrian and cycle transport to and from the site should be key factors in site choice.

The choice of transport available to staff and students should cover as wide a range as possible as opposed to dependence on car transport.

The college should encourage people to walk, cycle or use public transport more and use cars less.

Introduce a college bus service for the students.

Integrate the college into local cycle routes and maps.

Foot and cycle paths/lanes, drop off points, pedestrian crossings and lightings should included in the college design at an early stage.

Questions to consider

  • Is Pedestrian and cycle transport available to and from the site?
  • Does the building have facilities to cater for cyclists: Cycle sheds, showers, drying areas, lockers?
  • Are there pedestrian routes that form a direct route onto and off the site, in the direction of public transport nodes and other amenities, where in proximity to the development?
  • Is public transport infrastructure integrated into the project?
  • How far is the public transport infrastructure from the site in terms of minutes walking?

At what design stage should this issue be considered?

VISION, DESIGN

Freight traffic

Reduce road deliveries, maximise deliveries by rail or waterway. Consideration should be given to sourcing the materials for construction. Local sources should be first choice to minimise transportation.

Questions to consider

  • What is the percentage of deliveries /construction traffic by rail or waterway transport versus road?

At what design stage should this issue be considered?

CONSTRUCTION

Green Transportation

A Green Transportation Plan (GTP) should be drawn up in order to facilitate and manage an increase in car- sharing, use of public transport walking and cycling. Incentives should be provided to actively promote green travel. The GTP should be reviewed regularly for opportunities for improvement.

Questions to consider

  • Is there a travel plan for the site?
