Environment
Minimising the impact of the choice of site on the environment
Site Location
This relates to the land that the project is to be built upon or somehow effect.
Construction on Greenfield sites, sites of ecological value and high landscape and amenity value should be avoided where possible. Re-using previously developed land will protect the countryside and also encourage urban regeneration.
Questions to consider
- Has the site been previously developed?
- Is the site a Greenfield site?
- Are there any land-use designations associated with the site?
At what design stage should this issue be considered?
VISION

Context
The context of the local environment should link into the proposed college in order to protect the local vernacular. Surroundings should be used positively to inform the college design, integrating with the existing environment, with a high level of correlation between the college buildings and the landscape around.
Questions to consider
- Does the project integrate well with the surrounding environment e.g. landscape, planting?
At what design stage should this issue be considered?
VISION
Flood Plain
Building on flood plains reduces the available permeable surface for excess water to infiltrate, thus increasing the risk of flood in the area and surroundings and should be avoided.
Questions to consider
- Is the lowest point of the proposed college below a defined flood level e.g. 100 /200 year design event?
At what design stage should this issue be considered?
