Minimising the impact of the college's lighting strategy on the environment

Reduction of night time light pollution

Reduction of light pollution caused by lighting of sports fields and public realm areas is required, to minimise its impact on the surrounding environment.

Questions to consider

  • Does the external lighting design comply with the guidance in the Institution of Lighting Engineers (ILE) Guidance notes for the reduction of obtrusive light, 2005? Section 13 of the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005 is current legislation and will have to be adhered to. This deals with statutory nuisances of lighting and insects. Section 2 of new European legislation prEN12464 will soon be applicable.

Daylighting

In relation to energy efficiency it is more effective to maximise the amount of natural daylight rather than relying on artificial light.

Effective control needs to be implemented or incorporated into an automatic building management system

Questions to consider

  • Can natural light be used instead of artificial light?
  • What is the proportion of natural light to artificial light used?
  • What is the daylight performance?
